“Black Lives Matter shirts aren’t allowed” at Mercy Culture, Smith told us, adding that MAGA gear and merch are condoned if not outright encouraged at the Christian Nationalist church of choice for County Judge Tim O’Hare, District Attorney Phil Sorrells, Sheriff Bill Waybourn, and many of the other right-wing crackpots running Tarrant County.

Alleged racist remarks and outright calls to murder anyone part of the LGBTQ+ community by Mercy Culture members unsettled Smith, but a recent confrontation with one Mercy Culture staffer led Smith to finally sever ties with the church. Smith alleges that a female employee recently cornered her, questioned the way Smith dressed, and ordered her to leave or the police would be called.

The anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric from Mercy Culture elders sometimes leads to epic and hilarious blowback. A recently resurfaced video of Mercy Culture elder Nate Schatzline, a state representative who authored a bill to ban drag performances, shows him prancing in a black sequined dress while in college. (Hey, Nate. Unlike you, we’re not judging, just pointing out the hypocrisy. You do you, brah.) [Boldface added.]

Landon frequently preaches about witchcraft, and several people who closely follow Mercy Culture allege that Landon uses accusations of witchcraft to silence critics in his church. When our news magazine posted that Tarrant County Conservatives’ treasurer, Erik Richerson, is a self-described worship leader at Mercy Culture Church, members of the megachurch’s congregation flocked to @FortWorthWeekly to allege that our publication is run by Satan — it is? kick ass! — and that our editorial board would understand everything if we just went to one of their Sunday services.

We’ve read enough of Schott’s social media messages to know he is a homophobic, holier-than-thou jerk who, like O’Hare, hides behind nutso conspiracy theories and Talibanesque interpretations of the Bible as a means of spreading his delusions to unwitting or complicit followers. If gay people are going to hell, then so are divorcees. It’s there in the Bible. You should try reading it sometime and not just the politically convenient parts.

When they tried to get a shelter built and couldn’t get zoning changed, they said their opponents were demons.

Fort Worth Telegram, May 25, 2023 “Mercy Culture wants to build a 100-bed shelter. Pastor says those opposed are ‘demons.’”

The senior lead pastor of Fort Worth’s Mercy Culture Church, in a weekend sermon, referenced some residents’ opposition to the church’s plan to build a shelter for human trafficking victims. Those residents, he said, are demons, witches and warlocks.

On Sunday, Schott labeled last year’s opposition to the project as “insane demonic resistance.” “I said about a year ago there’s demonic people in that neighborhood and there’s some people in our church that got upset with me,” Schott said in the sermon.

“Where there’s witches and warlocks that live in the neighborhood that are actually doing seances on the porches of people that go to our church. See, see, you thought I wasn’t being nice when I was talking to demons,” Schott said. “Listen, it is not not being kind to a person — I’m not talking to people, I’m talking to devils.”
