”The Chosen” is a big hit series about the life of Jesus.
The series is produced and directed by Dallas Jenkins. The Dallas Morning News (DMN) has recently had two articles about “The Chosen.”
This is about the fact that filming of the 4th season of “The Chosen” has started.
Update: Still no mention of their homophobia.
Theis is an article on how much of it was produced in the DFW area.
They have had a fan convention in Dallas called ChosenCon.
Sets were built in North Texas to produce the 4th season of the show. It isn’t clear whether the production of “The Chosen” is going to continue to be produced in North Texas.
What are Dallas Jenkins religious beliefs?
He is a self-described conservative Evangelical Christian.
Is Dallas Jenkins anti-Gay?
Yes, he is. Dallas Jenkins thinks homosexuality is a sin.
Now, I am sure there will be some wailing about a camera man with a pride flag on camera used in filming The Chosen,” and the fact that Jenkins didn’t fire the camera man.
This is the story. One of the camera men on the set had a small Pride flag sticker on his camera. “The Chosen” does a lot of promotional short videos of behind the scenes which are released to the public. One of them inadvertently included the camera with the Pride flag and since a significant number of the fan base for Chosen are religious zealouts and since Evangelical Christianity is prone to be unhinged, there was a great amount of controversy over this.
This researcher couldn’t find out exactly what church Dallas Jenkins belongs to, or what religious denomination he is a member of if any. He hasn’t issued a position statement or made a statement about homosexuality. However, in the following video he makes it clear that homosexuality is a “sin.” You can also see that he is very likely the “love the sinner, hate the sin,” type of homophobe.
There are other interesting parts of this video.
Jenkins in explaining that he doesn’t police the morality of his film crew also explains that he doesn’t understand, “why this particular issue this particular uh sin is is worse and and requires public statement against and requires um us to to take a stand specifically against.” He also says the film crew knows where he stands. Jenkins calls homosexuality a sin. See 48:45 and 49:04 below.
This is the full statement:
48:38 secondly I also I've never understood this and you deal with this all the time some people can help me I don't understand
48:44 why it's more important to address that issue than the fact that like for example other crew members who are
48:50 straight are sleeping you know they've got their girlfriends and their boyfriends in their time sleeping like
48:56 other things that we as Believers believe are outside of God's will why this particular issue this particular uh
49:04 sin is is worse and and requires public statement against and requires
49:11 um us to to take a stand specifically against that's where I kind of get confused too is I just go yeah I uh
49:19 I have conversations with my cast and crew all the time they know where I stand on things it's done in love it's
49:24 done in respect it's done and and and I'm just I just don't fight this battle quote unquote assuming it's always a …
The whole video has the unspoken premise that he and his fan base and supporters feel homosexuality is a sin, and the topic is explaining why Jenkins employes this person. The whole discussion reveals that “The Chosen,” is a cultural production for an anti-Gay movement.
Jenkins also criticizes the use of the term Pride by the LGBT as follows:
53:11 about that too and you could even say well I mean like I said in my video I actually said in the in my response I
53:17 was like look I don't celebrate pride month look and I if I were assured it would say humility on it because I'm not
53:22 a big fan of the word pride and I've had this conversation with my with some of my my gay friends I'm like you just need to understand
53:28 the word pride look you want to go with that one that's fine but I'm like we the
53:36 Bible and our beliefs in general are always like pride no good like yeah you know I understand why you like that term
53:42 I'm just saying not helping your case right um and so uh but but I just don't I
53:48 reject the notion and I'm free to disagree but I'd reject the notion that it's shoving it down my throat right him
Jenkins misrepresents the very use of the term “Pride” as against Biblical belief.
Evidently there was a significant amount of fans who compared having a Pride flag on the set to having a swastika sticker on the set and Jenkins explains that he sees that they are somewhat different. The conversation start on 56:04.
Conclusion
Though Jenkins doesn’t otherwise comment on homosexuality and “The Chosen” so far doesn’t comment on the issue of homosexuality, “The Chosen” is an important film to mobilize a homophobic Evangelical movement. It’s success is a menace to the LGBT.
Again, Joy Ashford doesn’t inform the reader that this is part of an anti-Gay movement. Though there are numerous articles about “The Chosen,” the Pride flag controversy isn’t reported, even though that was major news in the Christian media and among his fans.
We might have the thought that Dallas is a modern city in which the LGBT live relatively free from prejudice, but as we examine Dallas more closely, we see that we are instead in an enivornment filled with religious prejudice against us.
