Introduction
There are several different things to discuss about the Elm Fork Gun Club. I have been wanting to report on what has happened to them, and also have some comments, however, I have been pressed for time.
Don’t assume my ideological stance is one way or another.
Elm Fork Gun Club is not on Twitter and where they might be I don’t know.
I am hoping that they will be alerted by this post to what is happening. We need them now.
Note: I have updated the recent posts about Protect Texas Kids with information as to their protests and Take Back Oak Lawn’s counter protest.
Don’t put yourself into the hands of the enemy.
So my criticism of the Elm Fork Gun Club is the lack of self control and bad strategy and needlessly causing a self-inflicted wound.
There was a local African American group working on issues and went and protested in Arlington and got arrested and then got tied up in the legal system for a year. They didn’t accomplish much of anything with the protest, but they put themselves into the hands of Republican judges and prosecutors and, I repeat myself, tied up for a year.
One key thing is always to realize what jurisdiction you are in.
Also, by squirting the opposition with mace, the opposition, Protect Texas Kids, got the sympathy of the public. Assault is a crime and then the person was arrested and then two other Elm Fork Gun Club members got arrested by attempting to intervene. So Protect Texas Kids won with this, and the Elm Fork Gun Club lost with this rash action.
So then they needed bail money, and they needed other types of support. They provided the opportunity for other groups to discredit them.
Now being anarchists they tend not to have discipline, but there needs to be reflection on this event and the self-inflicted wound.
For full disclosure, I am neither Marxist or anachist.
Free speech issue or bad strategy issue.
I remember long ago, a Nazi bookstore opened in a Jewish neighborhood. Eventually the Jewish people in the neighborhood smashed it up. I had a lot of sympathy with them. Many of them in the neighborhood were concentration camp survivors or had lost someone in the concentration camps.
I don’t think the proposal for your own murder deserves free speech protection.
Free speech advocates will say, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Evidently Evelyn Beatrice Hall said it first in 1906 in an anecdotal biography of Voltaire. You will hear it endlessly.
However, I am not going to defend a call for my death at all, let alone to the death. I am going to be trying to figure out how to get back at you within the law.
However, the problem with undertaking violence is that once violence is allowed as a response to someone’s statement, you then have the pretext for violence in response to statements people don’t like expanding out of control.
You will have chains of logic, syllogisms, justifying violence. Someone will assert that A means B which means C which means D, thus justifying violence against the person holding Opinion A because it supposedly means D. I am sure that there are all sorts of rationalizations to justify violence against one opinion because of one reason or another. You have the breakdown of civil discussion.
Once you open this means of rationaliation, you imperil your own safety, since the opposition will use it to justify violence against you.
Also, you usually have some good arguments against the person arguing for your death, and when you resort to violence, the focus is shifted onto what you did and away from your arguments. People do have dissenting beliefs in their lives and they can imagine themselves as being the targets of violence when someone attacks someone for their dissenting opinion.
Elm Forkers don’t get your knickers in a knot over this article.
Dallas (Vichy) Voice reporting
The Dallas (Vichy) Voice generally has avoided reporting on the Elm Fork Gun Club.
Earlier I have reported on how the Dallas Voice has erased the Elm Fork Gun Club in their reporting.
However, when three members of the Elm Fork Gun Club were arrested, the Dallas Voice sprung into action.
The Dallas Voice used the arrest photos for their article.
Contrast how the Dallas Voice has reported on the Elm Fork Gun Club with how the Rolling Stones reported on them.
The Elm Fork Gun Club has played a big role in protecting drag shows in North Texas. And they haven’t gotten support from the LGBT establishment when they have done so. If they hadn’t been there, there would have been nobody protecting the drag shows.
The Dallas Voice hasn’t ever done a story on them where they interview the members and understand their history and how they see things. Though, my gut feeling is that reporters from the Dallas Voice would be interviewing and investigating them to do an attack piece, perhaps subtly done.
Now that Dallas Pride is being attacked and it looks like Hamburger Mary’s is going to be targeted, who exactly is going to be providing protection?
Yes, there is stuff that Elm Fork Gun Club does and says that I wish they didn’t and sometimes makes me cringe, but on the other hand, in the world of violence against us, who is going to be standing against that violence?
I am not saying that you can’t be critical of the Elm Fork Gun Club, but they are part of the community and they are performing a role that no one else is. We need balanced reporting, not the reporting of the Dallas Voice which is worried about radicalism and what straight people might thing and believes we will get rights if the establishment has a good opinion of us.
Elm Fork Gun Club, where are you?
The PTK protest of Dallas Pride is coming up and later PTK states they will be protesting Hamburger Mary’s.
I am not asking that you contact me personally, but I would like to see you as counter-protestors. The is the Facebook post for the PTK protest.
